  HOW IT WORKS

While not required, families and friends are invited and encouraged to attend and participate in the casting of their loved one’s Memorial Artificial Reef Structure.

CASTING

The casting is performed at a location close to Ocean City, MD. The process includes mixing your loved one’s remains into an environmentally safe concrete reef mixture to create their Memorial Artificial Reef Structure.

The remains are mixed with concrete and then placed into the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure.

Families can then personalize the top of the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure with hand prints and written messages in the damp concrete. Small personal mementos that are not harmful to the environment can be added.

For family and friends that are unable to attend the casting or do not feel comfortable participating, our staff will perform all aspects of the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure casting.

PLACEMENT

On the day of your loved one’s Memorial Artificial Reef Structure placement and dedication we ask family and friends to arrive at the selected chartered boat dock by 7:30 AM. The family boat leaves promptly at 8:00 AM. All family members and friends ride on the family boat to the reef site where we meet the boat that transports and places the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure. We then conduct the dedication and placement of the reefs. We try to return to the dock no later than 1:00 PM. These times may vary depending on the reef location and weather.

Once the family boat arrives at the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure site, the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure is placed in the ocean.

After the Memorial Artificial Reef Structure has been placed, the placement boat moves away and the family boat then moves over the memorial site. Each family is given an opportunity to individually dedicate the reef site to their loved one.

THE FAMILY BOAT

Our staff arranges for a charter family boat to accommodate family and friends wishing to attend your loved one’s reef dedication and placement. The cost is generally $75 per person, regardless of age, for each person planning to attend.

All reservations for the family boat must be completed and paid by the time of the casting.
  Living Memorial

M.A.R.S. or Memorial Artificial Reef Structure are permanent reef structures that memorialize the passing of a loved one by helping to preserve and protect the marine environment for the benefit of future generations.
